thesis collection (2026) process

design statement

going into this project, i knew i wanted to do something with the idea of illusions and flatness. when the research began, the main things i’ve looked into were on the history of illusions, especially the illusions that play around with perspectives. this really helped me understand how illusions work, how people reacted, and what kind of conversations and questions were being brought up. this collection’s finalized vision is the concept of illusions with flatness and perspectives, heavily inspired by historical illusions and nature. the main shape is a semicircle. this collection has four looks. look one is a two-piece outfit of two of the same-sized semi-circle jacket and skirt. look two is a painted capelete and dress over a tulle skirt. look three is (now) a semi-circle bolero with 7,000+ hand-cut tulle leaves along with pants. look 4 is a dress from many deadstock mongolian sheep fur scraps with a silk velvet semi-circle headpiece. during this process, i had to shift things due to the lack of materials and unexpected damage to the look 3. i had to brainstorm on coming up with solutions that still aligned with my capstone’s theme, would work within the schedule, and within my budget.
